About the book >.>.> Although the fertile mind of Billy Mitchell had toyed with the formation of an air- borne trained force to be created from the 1st Infantry Division during the First World War it was not until more than two decades later that the idea of parachute infantry was really taken seriously in the upper echelons of the U.S. War Department. Since the Soviet Union and Germany had proceeded with the development of parachute forces the Assistant Chief of Staff sent a memorandum to the Chief of Infantry on 1 May 1939 requesting a study of the feasibility of “air infantry.” This study when completed suggested that air infantry could be tasked with hazardous missions behind enemy lines recon- naissance seizure and holding of key objectives and drops ahead of advancing mechanized forces- many of the missions which would eventually define the capabilities of parachute airmobile and special forces.
