About the book >.>.> Andrea del Verrocchio (1435-88) sculptor goldsmith and painter is best known as the teacher of Leonardo da Vinci. His few surviving works-seventeen sculptures in bronze silver marble and terracotta five paintings and a dozen drawings-show him to have been also a great artist in his own right and one of the most influential Florentine masters of the Renaissance. In the present book his life and stylistic development are fully discussed and an extensive critical catalogue of his works embodies the results of recent research. The author deals also with works erroneously attributed to Verrocchio. A plate section of 101 illustrations shows Verrocchio’s complete extant oeuvre with numerous details including such famous sculptures as the bronze David the group of Christ and St. Thomas the Putto with a Dolphin and the equestrian statue of Colleoni in Venice which was cast from the master’s model after his death. An appendix of reproductions of works by other artists together with critical notes demonstrates the great influence which Verrocchio exerted on many Florentine artists of the fifteenth century. This monograph is an important contribu- tion to our knowledge and appreciation of the art of the Italian Renaissance. (MP)
