About the book >.>.> Mrs. Cameron recorded her first successful photograph in 1864 when she was forty-nine. Photography proved to be the perfect outlet for her talents part artistic part social and from that date until her death in Ceylon in 1879 she persuaded or commanded family friends servants the famous or just passers-by whom she spotted from her window to pose before her camera. In 1874 she wrote a biographical fragment ‘Annals of My Glass House’ in which with characteristic emotion she describes her early struggles: “Therefore it is with effort that I restrain the overflow of my heart and simply state that my first lens was given to me by my cherished departed daughter and her husband with the words ‘It may amuse Mother to try to photograph during your solitude at Freshwater.’ “The gift from those I loved so tenderly added more and more impulse to my deeply seated love of the beautiful and from the first moment I handled my lens with a tender ardour and it has become to me as a living thing with voice and memory and creative vigour. Many and many a week in the year ’64 I worked fruitlessly. (MP)
