About the book >.>.> By and by when he came to his senses and found what he had done he was ‘sore grieved’; but the lands were gone from him for ever. Then she would chuckle and add and it would have been the same with Kilmichael had the laird no’ been warned not to tak’ his title deeds wi’ him up to the Castle! He went up to settle some marches question but he didna tak’ his deeds wi him- so he has the lands yet!’ Some years afterwards when Jeanie was married her husband greatly admired these two picturesque old women and having made a sketch of Mrs. Ramsay he informed the latter that he intended taking her a bottle of his best cham- pagne as a reward. This overture however was received with disconcerting disdain. The two dames informed him they did not approve of they foreign wines’ now if it had been ‘a bottle of whusky’ offered to them that would have been another matter! Needless to say they had it. Forty years ago there were still living in Arran three of the most beautiful women of their day. Talk about the Spanish Armada having lost boats on the West coast of Scotland the result was before you! for these magnificent women were all dark and of Spanish type and how the artists who used to visit Arran admired them! One was pure Spanish with the peculiar Spanish eyelashes not curling till they reached the tips then curving right back. This woman in a humble position in life was like a Roman Empress the straight even thick eyebrows finely-chiselled nose mobile mouth the blue-black hair the delicate curve of the chin the pallid skin. The build and carriage of all three women was regal; but in Arran these Spanish beauties with their mobile lips flashing eyes white teeth and haughty mien were held of little account; it was left to us to boast of them in London.
