About the book >.>.> The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo is pleased to present “Weavers of Worlds – A Century of Flux in Japanese Modern / Contemporary Art -” in marking its grand reopening. This exhibition takes the conditions of artistic practice in Japan as one of its themes and views artists as “weavers” who create by selectively editing disparate elements. It traces their actions in this regard primarily through artworks and materials in the museum’s collection. With “editing” thus as a keyword for understanding one facet of modern and contem- porary art in Japan the exhibition examines artists who consciously edit new trends in aesthetic thought and new technologies together with established Japanese expressive methods all while confronting social reality. Today with the advance of information technology an attitude of selectively editing diverse elements-amid conditions posed by a hybrid culture-are common to artists throughout the world. Since the nineteenth century however Japanese art has been distinguished by artists who experiencing such conditions early on forged an individual style by making the act of “editing” itself their artwork’s motif. In their case to pursue individual expression while groping for a relationship with the waves of incoming art trends they encountered here in the Far East was to face head-on the reality of having to edit a creative vision. It was we can say a reality that was like the chimera’s laughter and melancholy a chimera being a creature (SP)
