About the book >.>.> At 15 minutes’ notice to fly by day or 45 minutes by night 24 hours a day and 365 days a year in 2012 alone the Sea Kings of 771 NAS were called out from their RNAS Culdrose Comwall base on 251 occasions giving assistance to 235 persons in an area stretching from the Isles of Scilly in the west to the Dorset coast in the east; those of HMS Gannet SAR Flight at Prestwick meanwhile were scrambled 298 times and rescued 285 individuals across the north-west of England Northern Ireland and Scotland. But nothing of course lasts forever. In 2016 the responsibility for providing Search and Rescue coverage is due to pass over from the military to a civilian contractor operating much more modern aircraft on behalf of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency bringing the Sea King’s impressive SAR reign to an end. With the retirement of the entire UK Sea King SAR fleet a proud 63-year-long chapter of RN involvement in the saving of lives around these shores will also sadly come to a close. Sea King aircrew and maintainers alike will no doubt mourn the passing of this big charismatic robust and extraordinarily versatile helicopter that has given such sterling service and played an important part in so many people’s lives. This Haynes Manual will hopefully give something of an insight into the history of the aircraft as well as its capabilities its usage in the SAR role and some of the key individuals involved in making it all happen.
