About the book >.>.> Although I am clearly an ex-soldier with many memories some good. some not so good and some a little hazy with the passage of time I would have to admit that I had no intention whatsoever of even thinking about writing a book of this type until in 2008 I happened to be reading a Sunday newspaper and my gaze happened to fall upon a review of a book called “A Long Long War” written by a certain Ken Wharton. The book appeared to be a compilation of experiences of various soldiers who had served in Northern Ireland during the Troubles and the review was so glowing in its praise of the contents that I felt given my own background that I just had to go out and get it and read it immediately. This was in spite of the fact that Ken was apparently an ex-member of the Royal Green Jackets a unit with which my final regiment shared some not inconsiderable mutual animosity during the latter part of my army service in what was then West Germany. Both of our units were based in separate barracks in the northern city of Celle for many years and trouble was often not too far away when our paths crossed although it has to be said that Ken served in a UK based battalion.
