About the book >.>.> I was born into a family which had made cyder in Devonshire for generations. As a small boy in the 1920s my early recollection of my grandfather Henry Whiteway was of a large and cheerful old man. My grandmother Edith Whiteway was I felt rather strict and in the fashion of the time usually wore a large hat. My grandfather’s preferred drink was cyder which he had prepared by the natural conditioning method in bottles a process that was becoming obsolete. My father was manager of the company’s London office and factory and we lived in Wimbledon where I attended school. Again cyder was usually available and I enjoyed the non-alcoholic drink Cydrax. There were frequent references in family conversations to some new product or to the latest advertisements in newspapers or perhaps on the sides of the double-decker London buses. Occasionally visits were made to the factory at Vauxhall where the characteristic cyder smell was always present since the machines filled a multitude of bottles. On visits to Whimple Devon I saw my uncle Ronald who had recently returned from Nova Scotia to become general manager; his soft Canadian accent remained with him all his life. My other uncle Herbert had a son Richard about my own age with whom I spent many holidays in the summer. We became familiar with the sight of the apple orchards the farm carts laden with sacks of apples and again that pleasant cyder smell in the factory area.
