About the book >.>.> Wildflowers Across the Prairies includes descriptions of some 270 species of flowering plants of the northern tip of the “Great Plains of North America” (Figure 1). Most species are described by two color pictures: one of the flower or group of flowers the other of a whole plant or a group of plants in their natural habitat. A sketch and a brief description of FLOWERS FRUIT LEAVES GROWTH HABIT and HABITAT is also included. In the interests of accurate comparison of plants some pages differ through the introduction of another color illustration of a similar plant of the same genus or through replacement of the sketch with a color illustra- tion of the fruit of the species involved. The order in which plants are arranged in this book is the traditional taxonomic order followed by botanists and others who study plants. Within plant families the next taxonomic division genus has an alphabetic arrangement as does the arrangement of species within each genus. For the general reader use of the index will locate any plant by either common name or genus. In a few cases plants of different genera are included on the same page. For instance on page 145 three plants of different genera are included: the large white ground-cherry wild tomato and black henbane. They are shown on the same page to establish a clear comparison of these three poisonous members of the potato family (Solanacae). Another page (109) which departs significantly from the usual arrangement includes two sketches of plants commonly confused; the water- hemlock (Cicuta spp.) and the water-parsnip. (Sium spp.). The two sketches clearly illustrate differences in the leaves and in the inflorescence of the plants involved and a single color picture shows the water-hemlock in its natural habitat. (LL)
