About the book >.>.> When Sir William G. Gillies died in 1973 he left no direct descendants and his entire estate was be- queathed to the Royal Scottish Academy with which he had enjoyed a long and close relationship since he first became an Associate in 1940. Sir Robin Philipson President of the Academy at the time of Gillies’s death and Sir William Mac Taggart (Past President of the Academy) were executors of his estate. Certain paintings and some of his large col- lection of bric-a-brac were passed on to colleagues and friends. Other articles were distributed among the Scottish colleges of art for use in the studios (as Gillies had used them). The residue of Gillies’s pos- sessions – a vast collection of his own paintings and drawings personal items and furniture – passed into the collections of the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA). After much deliberation the RSA decided to sell the Gillies home in the Midlothian village of Temple. and to create a special fund to be used for educa- tional and charitable purposes. The Academy’s ‘Gillies Fund’ has since that time assisted Members of the Academy young artists and art historians in the furtherance of their work. (SP)
