About the book >.>.> This is one of the classic memoirs of the Second World War – an exciting tale of high adventure daring raids and guerrilla operations deep behind enemy lines. The author’s unquenchable thirst for action and his need always to be ‘in the thick of it’ shine through on every page. His war was both spectacular and event- ful. His experiences while serving in tanks with the King’s Own Hussars are exciting enough: racing through the Western De- sert in Wavell’s ‘blitzkrieg’ against the Italians in 1940; wounded and captured during the desperate battle for Crete; a hair’s breadth escape from Athens by boat; and a part in the epic Battle of the Cauldron against Rommel’s Panzers. But this is just the prelude. In 1943 he joined the SAS and led a squadron of jeeps armed with twin Vickers machine-guns in raids ambushes and patrols usually behind the German lines. In Tuni- sia Sicily Greece Italy and France his men created chaos among the enemy; and in 1945 he parachuted with a handful of men to lead the Italian partisans in the Apennines behind the Gothic Line. With an ever-expanding ‘private army’ his op- erations culminated in an audacious attack on a German Corps headquarters. Immensely readable these are the best. (SP)
