About the book >.>.> This is the story of a little but ancient place nestling in its fold of Exmoor – a quintessential Exmoor village whose story not only represents an intriguing local history but also reflects national events in English history. Our story begins in the mists of pre-history and concludes with living voices. It draws on original resources along with well-told stories and hopes to be both serious and scholarly as well as amusing and entertaining. It is therefore a book for all – for those who have lived here all their lives often with many a generation preceding them as well as for those others who have arrived more recently not to mention anyone with a local or passing interest in the village as a happy place to visit. In short it is a book for all those who know and love Withypool. Chapter 5 which forms the important central section of the book draws on some fascinating original material. The Lanacre manorial documents dating back to 1772 have a very interesting story to tell in their own right – the comings and goings payments and non-payments doings and misdoings which were dealt with locally and recorded beautifully on vellum. These documents which have hardly seen the light of day let alone been fully studied and annotated give a fascinating insight into how justice was administered and local administration was managed in times past. It was partly the growing awareness of the importance of these records that stimulated the family who now live at Lanacre to commission this book. (LL)
