About the book >.>.> Berthe Morisot Mary Cassatt Eva Gonzal?s and Marie Bracquemond were all respected artists during their life- times and were assumed by friends and critics alike to be members of the Impressionist movement. All four are rep- resented in important museums and collections yet they have not received the same public or scholarly attention that has been lavished on their male counterparts. By staging this exhibition the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco hope to shed light on the artistic contributions of these four women and make them known to the much wider audience they deserve. Women Impressionists features no fewer than 100 out- standing works by Morisot Cassatt Gonzal?s and Bracquemond. Previous exhibitions with a similar focus were much less comprehensive: Les Femmes impression- nistes in Paris ?n 1993 did not include Bracquemond and Las Mujeres impresionistas in Bilbao in 2002 was on a much smaller scale. The present exhibition could almost be described as four retrospectives rolled into one. Among the works are some virtually unknown paintings by Bracquemond which were last exhibited on a scale such as this in 1919. The accompanying catalogue presents a num ber of essays by experts sharing their latest findings on this particular facet of Impressionism. (MP)
