About the book >.>.> Ir is my privilege to send out these four volumes with their simple record of the lives of just five hundred Wykehamists to those whom they loved and whose love for them is enhanced and consecrated by their death. Side by side in these pages will be found the features of Scholars and Commoners who spent their boyhood together at Winchester some of them thirty or forty years ago many as it were but yesterday. They were lovely and pleasant in their lives and in their death they are not divided. The records are simple and unadorned because simplicity is our tradition and aim and also because as many parents have written to me “they” (their sons) “would not have it otherwise.” It hardly seemed right to weigh characters in the balance or to distinguish between man and man in endurance in courage or in any other grace. Such judgments tend at best to divide when we are thinking of the unity of their sacrifice. Something of what they did and suffered on many battlefields is set down and the honours which they won; but even those who stand highest on the roll of distinction would be the first to proclaim that the unreported and almost unnoticed exploits of some comrade-in-arms richly merited the same award. In this connection I am tempted to quote a few words written to me by a father about his boy: while accepting cordially the principle of reticence by which we have been guided he sends me privately some wonderful instances of his boy’s self-effacement and adds:” I feel that a life so full of quiet obscure heroism ought not to go unrecorded and that you yourself will be interested in the evidence that Winchester made a profound and unchangeable mark upon his character and (MP)
