About the book >.>.> It is now nearly thirty years since that momentous seminar of 1962 at the University of Wisconsin during which a way was found of melting glass in a furnace small enough to be used away from the confines of industry. The workshop of 1962 was probably as significant a moment in the history of glass as the time when glass was first blown.” For a decade after this event there was a frenzy of activity at art schools and on university campuses as new glass programmes were set up. By the mid 1970s over one hundred glass programmes were operating in America alone. Indeed the glass renaissance was essentially an American affair and it is in America that it has taken root most firmly since the 1960s. But it very soon became an international phenomenon and from the outset American ties with Europe have been close. Over the years glass styles have changed and a piece from the early 1960s looks dated today. Such a lot has happened and so fast that it has been difficult (recently in particular) to keep abreast of new trends. By now a sophisticated technical language has evolved; the birth pangs of the 1960s have been forgotten; and there is even a tendency to be blas? and dismissive of origins.
